St. John Ambulans sets to be in SMK La Salle Sentul, Kuala Lumpur by 2011

In the month of April 2010, I put in my papers for transfer from SJAM SDE to SJAM WPKL as I saw a need to return to my alma mater SMK La Salle Sentul, Kuala Lumpur in providing First Aid classes to my former society (Bulan Sabit Merah). I was the Chairman of Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah SMK La Salle Sentul, Kuala Lumpur from 1984-1986 and becoming one of the few longest serving Chairman of the society in the school. I too was serving as the committee member of the Old Boys Association of La Salle Sentul, KL (OBA LSS) 2007-2009.

It was sad that for the many years that bsm smklss existed, many of its members didn't acquired their Basic First Aid certification. They have only the very basic skills of it and a few passable marching skills to come to say. Being its former chair, I couldn't bear to see these lack of knowledge and skills in giving First Aid. Thus I made my moved that put my services in jeopardy (making me this year to missed my required annual 1st Aid re-examination for efficiency in service).

I was relieved after months of uncertainty from the SMK LSS as whether they would allow me and SJAM to set foot in the school or not. The verbal answer was given to me by the principal (after an hours discussion with her and the Co-curriculum teacher in charge in her office) that after this year's PMR I can begin canvassing for recruits to join SJAM SMKLSS next year. But at the same time I will continue my First Aid lessons to the present set of bsm smklss members.

Hopefully by then come 2011, the new recruits and present bsm members can sit for their 1st ever 1st Aid examination and would have acquired the necessary basic skills of giving and providing a more comprehensive 1st Aid to those around them. And finally, SJAM will set foot in SMK La Salle Sentul, Kuala Lumpur.

National Olympic Academy 2007 - 2009

I was a participant at the National Olympic Academy for young Sports Leaders in 2006. The inspiration gained from the moderators and speakers and meeting the other participants from all walks of life (or aptly sports in Malaysia) and not forgetting the International participants prompted me to return as a volunteer the next 3 years running. After the official session ended, we would organise teh-tarik sessions and meet-up with those who share the same passion in sports. The comradeship we share continues to grow and flourish for us to continue to strive for the best in the sport and the youths that follows.

Here I would like to share some pictures that makes the memories much sweeter.

Extrinsic Rewards for a Job well done as a Volunteer

As through the years as a volunteer, I has been given many certificates of appreciation for my contributions to the many different associations or organisations in time, effort or even money. Much can be learned as a Volunteer too, if we seek to learn and share with others.

The 1st of the 'Certificates' was from 1987, when I participated at a Charitable Jogathon organised by 'Yayasan Kebajikan Negara Malaysia' providing my services as a Red Crescent member from VAD 2 (Sentul) KL Barat.

I even had one on my birthday in 1991, as I was called to speak for 'Rancangan Selepas Peperiksaan Sijil Rendah Pelajaran (S.R.P.)' on that day at Sekolah Menengah Damansara Jaya, Petaling Jaya.

After many years of inactiveness, I once again volunteered myself during the KL'06 9th FESPIC Games Kuala Lumpur 2006 as the Attache to the Chef-de-Mission of Timor Leste.

In 2007 and 2006, the National Fitness Council (NFC) invited me as an expert consultant (pakar rujuk) their workshops as follows:
  1. Bengkel Pemantapan Modul Instruktur Kecergasan / Modul Pengurusan Gimnasium Majlis Kecergasan Kebangsaan (NFC) 2006
  2. Bengkel Pemantapan Modul Instruktur Kecergasan Gimnasium (Asas dan Lanjutan) 2007

and in due process recognized my services and contribution at both occasions by Jabatan Belia dan Sukan Negara, Kementerian Belia dan Sukan Malaysia.

A Diploma of Honor was awarded to me in recognition of meritorious duties undertaken on behalf of the Kuala Lumpur Bodybuilding Federation as the Organising Secretary of the 2007 Kuala Lumpur Bodybuilding Championships. This was the 1st of my 4th KL Bodybuilding Championships as the Organising Secretary (2007-present).

On the occasion of Beaconhouse Sri Inai Petaling Jaya Annual Sports Day 2007 for providing 1st Aid and leading a team of First Aiders during the same.

With my involvement at the International Cadet Camp 2008 by St. John Ambulance of Malaysia in conjunction of the SJAM Centenary Celebration (1908 - 2008) at Kem Temasya Rimba Templer, Rawang, Selangor Darul Ehsan.

Luncheon at the grounds of Istana Negara after the Award Investiture Ceremony

At the occasion of 2010 FT Day Celebration, it remain my high point as I was one of the 90 recipients of the Pingat Pangkuan Mahkota Wilayah (P.P.W.) honoured from a total of 240 other awards recipients bestowed by His Highness the Yang DiPertuan Agong (the King) at the Istana Negara on February 1, 2010. The award was for direct contributions made to the sports of bodybuilding as administrator (Honorary Secretary, Kuala Lumpur Bodybuilding Federation) and many other contributions made to the society.

The primary objective of being a volunteer is to have a "Willingness to Serve" others as like with the motto of St. John Ambulance "Service to Mankind" and my own "...I came to Serve and not to be served".

1st newspaper article about the sports I'm presently involved in as Honorary Secretary and Team KL 2010 - Team manager

New Mr Muscles For KL

by Kamaruzaman Ahmad
Thursday, July 1st, 2010 11:07:00

KUALA LUMPUR:   The Kuala Lumpur Bodybuilding Federation (KLBF) have included two new "strongmen" in their 12-member team for the National Championships in Penang from July 16-19.

They are Mohd Amir Omar and Cheong Teong Leong in the Below-70 Junior and Heavyweight categories respectively.

Both and ten others earned their tickets by virtue of emerging champions in their respective categories at the KL Championships at OCM Indoor Sports Arena last month.

While Mohd Amir is a rookie, Leong Teong did not compete in the national championships last year, as he was runners-up in the KL meet.

Meanwhile at 68, Ayob Said, who is the oldest member of the KL team, will compete in the Masters category (45 years and above).

Team manager Vincent Ho (above) said the best the team could hope for is to retain their overall third placing as at last year's championships in Johor.

"We are realistic of our chances and the target is overall third. It is the performances and formbook on the day of competition that counts."

"Records of previous statistics take a backseat. Police were last year's champions. For KL anything more than that is a bonus," said Vincent Ho who is also the honorary secretary of KLBF.
